The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Monthly Screening series will feature “A Separation” on Thursday, May 24, at 7:00 pm at DiFebo’s in Bear Trap Dunes, and on Friday, May 25, at 7:00 pm in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway.
Nominated for a 2011 Oscar® for Best Original Screenplay, this suspenseful drama is set in contemporary Iran. Wife Simin (Leila Hatami) wants to live abroad so her daugher Temeh (played by the director’s daughter Sarina Farhadi) will have more opportunities. Husband Nader (Peyman Moaadi) insists they need to stay in Iran to take care of his father who suffers from Alzheimers. Simin attempts to sue for divorce, but finds herself forced to move back in with her parents when the family court rejects her request.
When the demands of caring for his father become too great a burden, Nader then hires a young religious woman to assist, in hopes that his life will return to a normal state. However, when he discovers that the new maid has been lying to him and her own family, he realizes that there is much more on the line than his marriage. [2011, Iran, Runtime: 123 min, Rated: PG-13 for mature thematic material, In Farsi with English sub-titles]
Lisa Kenney of the “Denver Post” states “Very few movies capture as convincingly as “A Separation” does the ways in which seemingly honorable decisions can lead to interpersonal conflict -- even disaster.”
Monthly screenings are $4 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $6 for future members. Attendees of the Ocean View screening at DiFebo’s get 10% off their meal on the evening of the screening. DiFebo’s begins serving dinner at 4:30 pm, reservations and early arrivals for dinner are encouraged.
The mission of the RBFS is to promote the art of film and, through outreach initiatives, to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of local and extended communities. The Film Society sponsors monthly screenings, special events, and the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival (November 7 -11, 2012). The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is funded, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
