11/27/2009Rehoboth Beach Film Society Monthly Screening
REHOBOTH BEACH FILM SOCIETY’S MONTHLY SCREENING PRESENTS “12”. Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Monthly Screening will feature “12” on Friday, November 27, at 7:00 PM, in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway. This 2008 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar® nominee is a Russian remake of the American classic 12 Angry Men. The basic plot points are the same; twelve jurors must decide the fate of a Chechen teenager accused of murder, and while the case seems simple, one man takes a stand against the other eleven with his vote of “not guilty” igniting a discussion about the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. Included in this jury are a racist taxi-driver, a suspicious doctor, a vacillating TV producer, a Holocaust survivor, a flamboyant musician, a cemetery manager, and others who represent the fragmented society of modern day Russia. What unfolds during the jurors’ discussion is the story not only of the accused and his circumstances, but also of the jurors’ own back stories, preconceptions, and prejudices. [2007, Runtime: 159 min., Rated PG-13] Following the screening, Film Society member and volunteer Mike Shawen will lead a discussion about the story of 12 Angry Men and this Russian interpretation. Mr. Shawen holds a master's degree in film and spends his days broadening the minds of youngsters as a teacher in the Baltimore area. Monthly screenings are $2.00 for card-carrying RBFS members; and $4.00 for non-members. The mission of the RBFS is to promote the art of film and, through outreach initiatives, to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of local and extended communities. The Film Society sponsors monthly screenings, special events, and the annual Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival (November 10-14, 2010). The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is supported, in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to promoting and supporting the arts in Delaware. 11/06/2009Cinema Cabaret
CINEMA CABARET PRESENTS DINNER AND A SCREENING OF “PIECES OF APRIL”. Rehoboth Beach Film Society and OVATIONS Restaurant & Lounge co-present Cinema Cabaret, a dining and film series. The November 6 event will feature “Pieces of April”. Enjoy a relish tray appetizer, a choice of turkey & stuffing with gravy or Tofu Napoleon, served with carrots in sweet ginger butter, biscuits, with a dessert of mini apple-pecan pastries, and a choice of coffee, tea, or soda. Serving begins at 6:30 PM, and the film screening begins after desserts are served. “Pieces of April” stars Katie Holmes, Oliver Platt, and Patricia Clarkson as members of a family gathering together for a tension and chaos-filled holiday meal. Trying to make amends for her past as the ultimate problem child, April Burns (Holmes) has offered to host an elaborate, classic Thanksgiving dinner for her suburban clan in her grubby lower East Side apartment. But her efforts to create an unforgettable feast go awry when her oven breaks down. While her weary family makes its way to the city, April scrambles to find a way to pull off the perfect meal and the perfect memory. She turns to her neighbors for help, resulting in an argument with an eccentric neighbor, a dismembered turkey that requires a fake leg made of pastry, and the formation of new friendships, which help her reach a better understanding of the meaning of the holiday, and of the value of family. [2003, Runtime: 80 min., Rated: PG-13] Cinema Cabaret is held at OVATIONS, located on the lower level of 20 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach. Admission is $30 and includes a 3-course meal, coffee, tea, or soda, and a film. Alcoholic beverages and gratuity are not included. FREE parking is available in the parking lot opposite of Rehoboth Theater of the Arts. Reservations can be made by calling the Film Society at 302-645-9095, ext. 1. SEATING IS LIMITED AND ADVANCED TICKET PURCHASES ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Tickets are non-refundable. The mission of the RBFS is to promote the art of film and, through outreach initiatives, to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of local and extended communities.
